 The global energy system is undergoing a rapid transformation, and the electricity sector is at the forefront of this transition. The economics of competing energy sources are giving rise to new technologies, regulatory and market structures, business models, and modes of operation in this sector. Major long-term changes centered around regulatory strategies, institutional structures, market and competition dynamics, and organizational elements have taken place, and more are expected to occur.

KAPSARC seeks a passionate expert to join its Utilities and Renewables Program and to support associated advisory services that entertain requests of the domestic energy ecosystem. The candidates should have a background in power system modeling and preferably in energy economics. He/She will be part of a growing program and group of experts undertaking work on power systems modeling.

Working with senior members, the successful candidates would provide valuable input to several ongoing and new topics contributing to the production of high-quality work products and analysis with actionable policy options. KAPSARC’s work involves a mix of analytical and policy-oriented studies, which is conducted in a dynamic, multicultural environment by a team of highly qualified and experienced economists, engineers and policy analysts.

 

Main responsibilities

  • Carry out applied power system modeling using PLEXOS (a power system expansion model)

  • Use a range of modeling techniques and able to provide economics interpretations

  • Contribute to the drafting, editing and production of evidence-based presentations, policy papers, working papers, reports and other publications that are clear, concise and reader-friendly

  • Learn to design, conduct and disseminate findings and insights through effective communication that meets the needs of different audiences and maximizes the impact of KAPSARC’s work

  • Collaborate effectively across KAPSARC and the Energy Ecosystem to ensure that KAPSARC’s policy advice is developed and disseminated in a consistent and coherent way

  • Deliver presentations at meetings, conferences and workshops

  • Participate actively in external expert networks and in policy workshops

Experience

  • Previous experience in qualitative and quantitative research, preferably within an international research organization, think-tank, or similar.

  • Thorough knowledge of the electric power sector with direct experience in regulatory strategy and organization

  • Must possess strong numerical and/or quantitative modeling skills in a mainstream software, tool, environment, or method that is relevant to the position summary above (e.g., PLEXOS, MARKAL, GAMS, agent-based modeling, system dynamic modeling, python, advanced statistics, etc.).

  • Strong experience in developing evidence-based public policy.

  • Strong writing skills with experience in drafting, editing, and producing evidence-based policy papers, working papers, reports, peer-reviewed papers, and other publications.

  • Experience in advisory and consulting including preparing and delivering presentations and reports.

  • Strong communication skills with an enthusiastic team-player mindset, and excellent time management and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor´s degree in Economics, Business, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or other related fields

  • A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in energy policy, energy economics, power engineering or a related field is highly desirable

  • A minimum of 12 years of experience after a Bachelor, 10 years after an MSc, or 8 after a PhD
