JOB DESCRIPTION
KAPSARC is seeking an experienced economist to support its ongoing and future research projects in macroeconomics, with a particular focus on resource-rich countries. The selected candidate will join the Energy Macro & Microeconomics (EMM) Department, specializing in applied economic modeling and policy analysis. The role places strong emphasis on Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modeling and its application to trade and energy policy analysis in Saudi Arabia and other GCC economies within the context of the global energy transition. The ideal candidate should have expertise in developing, calibrating, and applying global CGE models for structural, macroeconomic, trade, climate, and energy policy analysis.
Responsibilities:
• Develop and contribute to research projects and collaborate with other researchers.
• Conduct quantitative economic research on energy or macroeconomics relevant to policymaking in Saudi Arabia, other oil-exporting countries and their trading partners.
• Lead and mentor junior team members.
• Develop new, and maintain/improve existing KAPSARC macroeconomic and energy models, particularly CGE models, and apply them to support policy decision making.
• Support KAPSARC’s advisory department and its consultants with analytical insights based on economic modeling and research findings.
• Write discussion papers, policy briefs, and other materials derived from research.
• Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals and present them at conferences.
Competencies & Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Economics, with a specialization in trade, environmental or energy policy.
• A proven track record of publications in top-tier peer-reviewed economics journals, including general-interest, macroeconomics, or leading field journals in energy economics and other influential peer-reivewed publications of reputable international organizations or think tanks.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills in English, both writing and oral.
• Over 10 years of experience (after Ph.D.) working in macroeconomic and energy policy analysis, preferably within a research organization or an international organization.
• Expertise in CGE modeling in GAMS, including building, calibrating, and applying CGE models for policy analysis, particularly in resource-rich economies.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with the ability to develop and enhance economic models for policymaking.
• A good understanding of macroeconomic principles and the energy markets.
• Prior experience working on advisory or consultancy projects is a strong advantage.
